– Dragon Ball: Toriyama explains why Vegeta has never reached the super saiyan 3 stage! (Vegeta Super Saiyan 3):
Dragon Ball fans have long wondered about one of the most famous Dragon Ball series characters, Vegeta. Although being the prince of all saiyans, Vegeta has never reached the stage of Super Saiyan 3, a stage characterized by a long blonde and shiny hair with a massive power up and agility boost from its predecessor level, the Super Saiyan 2. Lately, Akira Toriyama, The creator of the Anime and Manga responded to these interrogations.
– Goku’s Transformation into Super Saiyan 3:
It was in the Dragon Ball Z Buu Saga that we first ever saw the Super Saiyan 3 transformation. Only Goku and Gotenks (fusion between Goten and Trunks) mastered it at that time. Sadly, Vegeta was unable to replicate it, and in the Dragon Ball Super Series, the prince of Saiyans was seen moving from stage 2 to Super Saiyan God and then Blue without passing by the third stage. Even in Dragon Ball GT (even if it’s not considered Cannon), he goes directly from stage 2 to 4 without going through the 3!
Akira Toriyama had confided in an interview a few years ago that The Super Saiyan 3 transformation is his favorite transformation, and it is also the most popular one among fans! So why didn’t we ever get a super saiyan 3 Vegeta? Simply because the “LACK OF MEANS”.
Toriyama explained this very simply: “Drawing (and animating) a stage 3 Super Saiyan is a real ordeal! The famous long hair that contributed to the popularity of this transformation is very complicated to make and draw, plus it takes a lot of time. And as we know, time is money. The producers of Dragon Ball absolutely wanted an episode to come out every Sunday, so it was decided to give up the idea of moving Vegeta to the Super Saiyan 3 stage”.
So, finally, as we saw the reasons were never script-related or anything but purely connected to lack of budget. Alot of fans were disappointed by this but at least they now have an answer.
